The Scott Reeves’ Quintet’s “Shapeshifter,” a live album, recorded at Cecil’s Jazz Club in West Orange, New Jersey, is a vibrant mainstream jazz recording of Reeves’ originals, performed by some of the 21st century’s top jazz artists.
Reeves, a trombonist by trade, reaches for his alto flugelhorn on seven tracks, and pulls out an alto valve trombone on two others. The rest of the quintet are top artists: Tenor saxophonist Rich Perry (Maria Schneider); pianist Jim Ridl; bassist Mike McGuirk; and Andy Watson on drums.
